South Dakota drivers meet deer more often than drivers almost anywhere else in the country, and on the section roads around Pierre it is less a question of whether than when. Wheelhouse has been putting the results back together for a quarter century.

The damage is rarely just what you can see

A deer at speed loads the front of a vehicle unevenly. The grille and the panel beneath it take the visible hit, but the force carries into the cooling stack behind them: radiator, condenser, and the fans and shrouds packed in tight around both. A slow coolant leak that shows up two days later is a common ending to a hit that looked survivable.

Behind that sit the hood latch, the lamp mounts, and on newer vehicles the radar and camera hardware that runs adaptive cruise and braking assistance. That equipment is costly, easy to knock out of true, and completely invisible from the driver's seat.

A strike toward one corner is usually worse news than a square one. It twists the rail instead of compressing it, and that is the point where frame work joins the estimate.

Is it safe to drive home

Sometimes yes, sometimes not at all. Three things worth checking before you pull back onto the road:

Coolant. A puddle under the front, or a temperature needle climbing, means stop. Running a punctured radiator dry will cost you more than the tow would have.
The hood. If the latch or its mount absorbed part of the impact, the hood can lift at highway speed. If it will not close and lock properly, leave it.
Lamps. A headlamp hanging loose in its housing, or aimed at the treetops, is a genuine hazard on an unlit gravel road after dark.

The part nobody warns you about

A deer leaves behind more than dents. Hair, hide, and fluid pack into the grille, the radiator fins, and every cavity under the hood. Left in place it will smell for months, and it does the surrounding paint no favours at all.

Clearing that out thoroughly is the first job, before a single panel comes off. A shop that hurries past it hands back a vehicle that looks right and does not smell right, and you find that out during the first warm week of spring.

What the repair actually involves

We strip the front end to establish the real extent, because an estimate written from photographs is nearly always short of the truth. Once the structure is measured and brought back to specification, panels and lighting go on, and refinishing blends the fresh work into your existing paint so the repair does not announce itself.

A dent with unbroken paint over it can often go to our paintless dent repair technician rather than into the paint booth, which keeps the original finish on the panel. Where driver assistance hardware sits behind the grille, it is recalibrated before the vehicle goes back to you.

We file the insurance claim and handle the adjuster, so that side of it is not your problem.
