Why the original paint matters

Factory paint is applied to a bare shell in conditions no auto body shop can reproduce afterward. Refinishing replaces it with something applied later, however well. A dent lifted with the finish intact leaves no repair history on that panel at all, which shows up at trade-in.

What makes a dent a candidate

The paint has to be unbroken. If the finish is cracked or chipped at the low point, no amount of shaping restores it and the panel needs conventional repair.

Access matters too. The technician needs to reach behind the panel, through a window channel, a lamp opening, or a liner that can be dropped. Bracing and factory foam can put an otherwise simple dent out of reach.

Where it works best

Door dings from the lot at the grocery store. Shopping cart damage. Hail dimples. Shallow creases where the metal moved but the paint stretched without splitting. One customer had a fairly decent door ding taken out of a Jeep and called the process painless, which is roughly the intended experience.

Where it does not

Sharp creases in stretched metal. Dents on a hard body line or at a panel edge. Areas filled before. Some aluminum panels, which lack the memory steel has.
